HISTORY OF GURU NANAK INSTITUTION, IPOH.
The Idea of putting up a school building was mooted by the Executive Committee of Khalsa Diwan Malaya in 1949. At the meeting held on 10.12.1950, it was decided that the purpose of the school shall be to teach Punjabi, English and other languages. Then, a 21/2 acre piece of land was purchased at the cost of $69,000.00. Donations from embers and well-wishers were collected.
As the plan to purchase the land was finalised on Guru Nanak's Birthday, it was decided to name the school "Guru Nanak Institution'.
An Akhand Paath to mark the occasion was held at the grounds from 5.1.1051 to 7.1.1951. Sardar Jagat Singh was then President of Khalsa Diwan Malaya.
On 10.1.1951, the School opened and Sardar Dial Singh was the first Headmaster of the School. The enrolment on the inaugural occasion was 589 students. It increased year by year, with the highest enrolment of 1288 reached in 1956 The school ran morning and afternoon sessions till 1957, when the evening session was closed due to poor enrolment.
It was the biggest private centre of Education in Perak, but enrolment reduced when the Government opened up Vocational schools for school drop-outs in the late 70s.
In 1954, the School came up with its own magazine "The Guru".
